Playing With Cardboard =)

So remember the recipe cards I made? Well I finally have a box for them! The best part is that I made it myself!! I was in Michaels yesterday and I found a recipe box for $1. So I got it and planned on covering it, but I put my recipe cards in first and I didn't like the way the fit. There was a a pretty big gap on each side, and the recipe cards I already did almost filled it up. I decided that I wasn't going to waste my time and supplies altering it, when I wasn't really happy with it, and it didn't have much growing room. I still haven't even written down most of the recipes I have memorized, plus I'm sure I'll be adding many more over the years. Sooo, I was looking at the box, an starting thinking, ya know this wouldn't be too hard to make..so that's what I did! I made mine a little more narrow, but deeper to accommodate more cards. Mine is 6 wide X 4 deep X 4.5 tall. I didn't have enough chipboard, so I used a cardboard box. I used one of the thinner ones, because they seem a little more stable (the thick ones seem too bend/dent to easily).

It was actually pretty simple. VERY time consuming, but simple. It took me a good couple of hours, but I was bored anyway smile. All you have to do is make your bottom whatever size you want. I just cut the pieces, tapped them together with masking tape then covered with paper. Then make another box just a tad smaller, and 1/2" taller so it fits inside the other box. Then make the lid a tiny bit bigger than the bottom of the box, so that once it's covered in paper, it will still easily fit on top of the inner box. When you are covering the inside of the lid, you want the piece of paper in the back to be about 5" long. You just glue it to the top part, and stick the other end down in between the bottom inner box and the outer box (I squirted a bunch of glue in between the boxes first), then attach a piece of ribbon to the top and bottom so that the paper holding the lid on doesn't rip. Now I kinda screwed up. In the picture below, you can easily see the seams on the side. Those were supposed to face the other direction, where they'd be less noticeable, but I didn't realize they were facing the wrong way until the back piece holding the top on was glued in. I wish SU sold really long cardstock for stuff like this. I hate having seems in an obvious place.

I made this a couple of weeks ago to store my Copic markers. Once again, made from a cardboard box! This was super easy to make. It didn't take long at all! Good thing, because I'm going to order some more Copics soon, so I guess I'm probably about to outgrow it. I'd rather one with more dividers anyway. As you can see, I'm in the process of putting the numbers on the end of my Ciaos. The circle is from a regular 3 hole punch. I just colored the circles, wrote the number/letter on it and stuck it on with a glue dot.

I've got a card around here somewhere that I made last night, but I think it got lost under the mess on my stamp table rolleyes. I post that whenever I manage to locate it, lol. Hope you have an awesome day!

Stamp Something Challenge-Recipe cards

Good morning! The theme for this weeks Stamp Something Challenge is Recipe Somethings. Any type of recipe project. I've actually been working on mine for a while, so it worked out perfectly that this was the challenge this week. I still need to find a box though.
I loved this stamp set From the Kitchen of from SU, but I didn't like the recipe cards. There was hardly any room to write. Out of all of the recipes I wrote down, only two of them would fit on one card. I didn't want multiple cards per recipe either, so this was my solution.
Just a piece of cardstock measuring 5 1/4 X 6 1/2. I created a word document and set the page size to that and just filled it with lines. Then I just folded it in half with the lines on the inside and then stamped the recipe card image on the front. I also made a few like this for really long recipes. Please excuse my chicken scratch rolleyes.
Same concept as the one above but this one measures 5 1/4 X 9 1/4. My original plan was to use the slit punch at the bottom of the cards so I could tuck in the flap and keep them from being bulky, but I kept forgetting to order the darn thing. So yesterday I pulled out my recipe cards (they've been just stacked up assembled for a while ) and they were perfectly flat, so I decided I didn't need the slit punch after all.

I still have a few more recipes to copy, so so far I don't have anything for the veggies or soups section...notice the desert stack is the thickest, lol. I don't really like to cook real food, but I'm all about deserts!

Now I just need a box to put them in. I'm having a hard time finding one I like. =)

SC204 and a recipe =)

Aren't these monkeys adorable! I've been wanting this set for a few months, so when I saw it at Hobby Lobby last night I had to get it! I got 4 more Copics and a Brilliance ink pad toorazz. This one is working great. I don't know whats up with the palette. I've seen a bunch of people say that's what they use, but it runs like crazy for me, even if I heat set it. This card uses the sketch challenge on SCS, 204.

I wanted to share a great recipe with you too. I'm actually making this right now, to bring with us tomorrow. We are going to NC to see hubby's family. This is one of my favorite deserts! I'll warn you, it's rich, and I'm sure it's horrible for you wink.

Caramel Pie
2 cans sweetened condensed milk
Graham cracker pie crust
Small container of Cool Whip
Mini Chocolate Chips (or shaved Hershey's bar) to sprinkle on top

I always double this recipe, since it's not trouble at all to make more, you just need a bigger pot.
Remove the labels from the cans of sweetened condensed milk. Scrap off the glue with a fork or something. It will leave a nasty very hard to remove ring in your pot if you don't. Boil the cans of sweetened condensed milk ON THEIR SIDES (just in case they bust) for 2 1/2 hours. Make sure they are fully covered with water at all times because they could cause them to burst. Rotate the cans every half hour or so. Drain the water, and once the cans are cooled off, put them in the refrigerator. Wait at least 2 hours before you open the cans. Empty the cans into a bowl and stir. Then just put the caramel into the pie crusts. Top with cool whip and mini chocolate chips. Let it sit in the refrigerator a few more hours or overnight if possible to firm up. It tastes better later too.

Oh, and if you want to knock off some of the calories, you can use one can of reduced fat sweet condensed milk and one regular for each pie (I've never tired doing both). You really can't tell. It just makes it slightly less rich. I actually prefer it this way, but I forgot about that when I was buying sweetened condensed milk yesterdayrolleyes.

BTW, I've never had a can burst, but it's always best to be on the safe side. If you don't feel comfortable with this method though, I've seen a recipe where you empty the cans into a slow cooker and cook for 6 hours. I've never tried it though.

Happy Thanksgiving!!
